How to Fold the American Flag the Right Way

Folding the American flag is more than a matter of neatness—it's an act of respect and tradition.

Whether you're a veteran, a proud homeowner, or simply someone who cherishes national values, knowing the correct way to fold the flag honors its significance.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you do it right.

Why Flag Folding Matters

The American flag is a powerful symbol of unity, sacrifice, and freedom.

When folded properly, it takes the shape of a triangle, reminiscent of the tri-corner hats worn during the Revolutionary War.

This form is more than ceremonial; it conveys dignity and care for what the flag represents.

Step-by-Step Guide to Folding the American Flag

Step 1: Two People, Facing Each Other
Start by holding the flag waist-high, horizontally, between two people. Make sure the flag is stretched out and parallel to the ground.

Step 2: Fold in Half Lengthwise
Fold the lower striped half of the flag lengthwise over the field of stars. Ensure the edges are aligned.

Step 3: Fold in Half Lengthwise Again
Repeat the fold so that the blue field of stars remains on the outside.

Step 4: Begin the Triangle Folds
Starting at the striped end, fold the flag into a triangle by bringing the striped corner of the folded edge to the open edge. Continue folding in triangles until the entire flag resembles a blue triangle with stars showing.

Step 5: Tuck and Secure
Tuck the last fold into the open edge to secure it neatly. The final result should be compact and respectful.

When to Fold the Flag

  • After a flag ceremony or event
  • At the end of the day when the flag is taken down
  • During memorial services or military honors
